This workshop is designed to offer suggestions and an opportunity for discussion of how to create an accessible learning environment in the remote classroom. We’ll focus on challenges posed by online learning for students and teachers with cognitive and physical disabilities. We will discuss how student accommodations designed for the in-person classroom do and do not translate to the remote format, and we will address access practices that can be useful in online learning environments. How might we design syllabi, assignments, and synchronous and asynchronous activities that accommodate all learners? How might we use principles of universal design in our course design and classroom strategies? How might literature and other reading-based courses present particular affordances, and particular challenges, for designing accessible content and instructional methods?
